Looking for an entry point!

I just recently discovered the community (hello :waving_hand:) and I am looking for an entry point into live coding. I am proficient with programming in general, but all my exposure to live coding has been some youtube shorts and reading through some posts of this forum (and have been amazed by what I have seen until this point).

I would like to give live coding a try and I am looking for advice on where to start. Mainly I’m thinking of pointers to already existing resources to get up to speed but anything is welcome!

For instance, I read something Tidal and Strudel, which to my understanding are set ups for live coding. Is there any common knowledge about these that, as a noobie, I should be aware of before deciding which one to use?

Also, if anyone wants to recommend any algorave or live coding content, like youtube channels or videos and stuff, that would also be appreciated!

Hi, I’m part of the italian node (in particular the one situated in Pisa). As of today with my 1 year experience in this community I think the best 2 entry points are Strudel (music) and Hydra (visuals). Both of them do not require any installation, they are live web tools usable in browser. Both have very entry level syntax/usability and documentation. Strudel documentation is found inside the main site, instead examples of hydra can be found searching ā€œhydra functionsā€ (they are under the same web domain, I’m just not sure how to get from hydra to them without searching). Generally speaking live coding resides on a lot of gray areas from an artistic and performative perspective. You can both experiment yourself and find people’s creative work around. One thing that could help a lot is music theory, not from chords and scales perspective but just basic composition and rythm, it helps a lot if you are not familiar generally with creating music. Also knowing a little bit of basic effects and envelopes like ā€œasdrā€˜',’reverb’, etc.. For any question just follow up in this thread I’ll do whatever I can to help if I can ^^

I can share the path my feed took recently. I watched a few live-coding Shorts like this one, which led to longer how-tos like this one, and the algorithm pivoted to educational content from there. :+1:

Thank you for the pieces of advice, much appreciated ! I did end up starting with Strudel, yes. I am at the moment trying to find my way through it (I never thought this is what I was going to be using the Haskell I learnt at uni for :joy:).

Regarding the nodes, I checked a listing on toplap and I unfortunately didn’t see any on my city (München). Could it still be that there is one but for some reason it is not listed there? Or chances are that if I didn’t find it there, it means that there is none?

Unfortunately/Fortunately the nature of live coding and the community is quite distributed and underground. There might be people out there not knowing there are others performing/interested in your area.
