Introductions - please say hello!

Hola amigxs, as part of Toplap Montréal a growing group of people, we are promoting live coding in collaboration with other practices and techniques, looking to expand our knowledge by learning from other approaches and perspectives + giving space to overlooked - (re)emergent artists, thinkers, etc.- Will be amazing to do something together in the near future, xx -

Hi all, I’m Guy and I’m based in London, U.K.

I’ve been involved in the live coding scene for a few years, mostly just doing visuals at algoraves and building/maintaining a couple of live coding projects. I’ve started helping more with workshops and I’m interested in doing more of them in the future. I work as a software dev by day so I’m definitely outside of the academia end of the spectrum

Hell everyone, I’m Antonio Roberts (hellocatfood) and I’m based in Birmingham in the UK.

I’m an artist and curator mostly working in galleries and other cultural institutions. As a live coder I mostly do visuals using Pure Data and I’ve recently branched out into making music, mostly via Tidal.

I’ve organised three Algoraves since 2016 via the gallery Vivid Projects. I’m leaving there in March 2019 so I’m hoping to take Algoraves to new places. I also do a lot of workshops around creative coding, focusing on Pure Data/GEM, livecodelab, imagemagick and other tools.

I like cats.

Hello, I’m Mauro Di Giovanni (Rome, Italy). From the 90s I am involved in the organization and technical aspects (audio) of rave (free parties), gigs, and techno/psy parties. Currently I am involved in analysis and acoustic design, and I am a huge fan of the International live coding scene for its free and inclusive attitude. I am co-founder of TOPLAP Italia node and co-founder of a collective called “Creative Coding Rome” based in the city of Rome.

Hello, I’m Emma, I’m based in London. I mostly write songs with ixi lang, have been doing the algorave thing for about six months, and am very excited about it. I’m a PhD student but I’m researching the social worlds of the ukulele rather than anything strictly laptop music-related; there are some surprising similarities though.

I work on and off as a lecturer (also at Goldsmiths) and love it, and I really, really want to get into running workshops, so it’s cool to see how many people here are already doing that. Thanks for having me

My name is Simon, and I’m based in Glasgow, where I am head of the masters programmes in music at the Royal Conservatoire of Glasgow. I’ve been working with SuperCollider for a number of years now as part of my creative and compositional work: in the last couple of years I’ve also become interested in performing with code as well. So far I’ve organised one algorave and led a couple of workshops, and I wasn’t sure whether to join in here or not! However, I’m really interested in seeing if it is possible to establish a community of livecoders here in Scotland.

Hi there,
I am Marvin, and I brand my artistic content as “qantuum”.

Based in Nice, France, soon-to-be based in Istanbul, Turkey.
I am currently working on some small concepts in FoxDot, that I also share on the chat, and I guess it is somewhat appreciated.
Above all, I love listening to music. Formerly a metalhead (still at times), now I appreciate chill electro and downtempo beats. Boards of Canada, the duo of brothers Michael and Marcus Sandison, is my top-level music dose. I have lots of respect for these guys and I am willing to educate myself as they are. I am also very interested in microtonal music, since I have discovered the musician Sevish, who does wonders on this field. The microtonal community also is huge. I would love to bring some microtonal algo novelty.

Unfortunately, one has to make ends meet. I was never invested in learning music as a child nor as a teenager, and I currently engage myself in a 9-5 job in the food industry, which serves a global career destined to give me a comfortable income and also retirement. I try to pratice anything music at least 10 minuts a day.

Despise being so late in skill, and feeling not so valuable compared to the good specialists we have over there, I really want to get comfortable with music making and now live coding, even though this effort is not likely to get me a life where I stop my current career to embrace the world of music.

Live coding is a good opportunity to me since it gives a whole new technique to music making, and I long to be part of this pioneering movement.

It is a pleasure to be on this place with you guys. I’ll try to find some music friends in Istanbul when I get there. I saw there were some Istanbuliot toplap15 performers, whom I’ll follow updates and events. And I know of a Turkey-based musician videast I want to learn from : Tolgahan Cogulu. Really, the guy is awesome.

All the best for you, and maybe one day I will be able to take part or to organize an Algorave party

Cheers!

Hi, I’m Thorsten,
based in San Francisco, where I’m currently organizing an event, Algorithmic Art Assembly, coming up in March. This is the first event I’ve organized in a few years.
Before SF, i was in London for ten years, where I used to put on a lot of smaller shows.

Hi, I’m Joseph Wilk based in Bath, UK.
I’ve organised small tech conferences and workshops on live-coding, with a focus on beginners (looking at visuals and audio). I’ve started a meetup which meets monthly to share and encourage collaboration around making art with code. I’m not very good at organising , its really hard and I struggle to find a crossover that is a gig venue and willing to let people learn and develop.

Hola!
I’m Alejandro, after spend 4 years in Sheffield UK, now I’m back to my home country, Chile. At the moment I’m travelling between La Ligua (in the countryside 2 hrs from Santiago) and Santiago the capital.
I’m planning to start a lot of activities during the second half of this year, including algoraves, workshops and others. Chile is still new regarding live coding… at least people working on these matters are a bit dispersed, so hopefully I can join a couple of friends to start increasing the movement!
I’ll keep you posted so when we can get enough ‘critical mass’ we would start a new TOPLAP node in these latitudes :slightly_smiling_face:

Hello,

I’m David. I’m based in Hamilton, Canada at McMaster University, where ongoing live coding stuff includes weekly meetings of the Cybernetic Orchestra (a TOPLAP node…), miscellaneous activities and experiments in the Networked Imagination Laboratory (dedicated to live coding and network music, both understood as broadly as possible), the development of collaborative platforms (Estuary, currently), and annual workshop events - next one is this June 10-14 by the way - connected to a new research centre (Centre for Networked Media and Performance, CNMAP). I get to work with some amazing MA and PhD students who come here to do live coding related research projects (please, anyone, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if that is something that would be helpful to your path as well!). Recently I’ve been starting to do more things working with teachers and school children, which is something I’m quite excited about, in part because I think it falls outside of and beyond the limiting conception of “community”.

Yours truly,
David

Hello,

I’m Kevin. I’m based in Pittsburgh and have been organizing events for a number of years as ‘cosmic sound’. Most events are focused on experimental/immersive settings with (reasonably) high production value. I’ve been involved as a curator for various regional festivals and arts organizations.

With the help of a few other awesome Pittsburgh people, we are starting the Pittsburgh Live Code group which helps to organize idea exchanges and technical demos for those interested in using live coding technologies. I am familiar with a lot of you via my project ‘spednar’ - I would love to get more cross-pollination among american cities happening.

Cheers

Hi everyone!

I’m Dimitris, originally from Greece but currently based in London, UK. I’m still quite new to the live coding practice and community, yet it somehow feels so obvious and natural, as if I have known it for years. I’m a musician with a classical background and also enjoy playing around with shader graphics, but my main interest in live coding lies beyond sound and image; I’m fascinated by it as a medium for formalising, exploring, and interacting with thoughts of all kinds.

Besides that, I am curious about live coding’s potential as a pedagogical method and I’m very keen in organising educational activities around it, online or in person. I’m working on and using a Haskell library called TimeLines, a modular synth and sequencer based on (simple) mathematical functions of time, which I am hoping to one day use to teach the intersection of 3 of my favourite things: music, maths, and computation.

If anyone is interested in joining efforts to produce and deliver free, high-quality educational content around any and all of these topics, then please get in touch!

Hello I’m Lucy, I live in Sheffield UK and organise loads of gigs, workshops & other events here (some live coding, some not). I co founded tidal club with Alex and I’m working on the LIF hackathon with Joanne. I make live coded music as heavy lifting and sound art with SONA and I’m really interested in community building - particularly thinking of alternative routes into live coding for people with no training in music or tech (and particularly for people who are not academics!)

Hi, my name is Innocent. I’m from Zimbabwe but I’m permanently based in Sheffield. I perform as a solo act (innocent) using Foxdot, and as part of TYPE (The Yorkshire Programming Ensemble). I don’t have a music background and never had the opportunity to learn any instruments as a kid. I’ve just always loved music and Live Coding gave me outlet.

I’m interested in taking part in events in and outside the UK so please do get in touch if you’re organising something.

I’m Mike, near Minneapolis, USA. I like cooking, video games, playing ice hockey, and making weird music with code.

Hi there,
I am Jesús Jara, I live in Madrid and run live coding events in the city. I am about to join the toplap community with a node in Madrid. I coordinated ICLC 2019.

I also work in a recently created school of music where live coding is taught and used to develop laptop orchestras. Thus I am very interested on workshop resources and proposals to teach and learn to creatively live code.

I am open to any other kind of collaboration between toplap nodes.

Happy 8th of March!
